News Journal of February 1, 2012: The Cold Spell

Today on Long Island the temperatures would be comfortable for many reaching 51 degrees. Although it will be a rainy day also relief continued this week is felt by homeowners. The price of heating oil challenges the limited budgets of scores of residents, so warmer weather would unquestionably be welcomed. Millions in Europe wish for this warmth as they continue to confront an inflicting cold spell. When the temperatures dropped minus 30C in certain regions according to the Independent UK there were power outages, commuting nightmares, nursing homes and school closures. The hurting, winter cold caused major traffic blockage in cities, likely because some automobiles stalled.

The major freeze contributed to over 70 lives lost, there were reported 43 deaths in Ukraine, some found lying in streets. Most of the deaths were homeless individuals. In addition in the same country there were several hundreds hospitalized having conditions of frostbite and hypothermia. In Ukraine according to The Associated Press the authorities had set up over 1700 heating shelters. Many of those homeless might have the option to seek warm refuse. For me it is arduous to work or function, such as writing this blog post when in severe cold weather. How much a delight it would be for earth's inhabitants if all four seasons would be pleasant to live in, that weather conditions would no longer threaten peoples' lives. May that day proceed forward, I look forward in returning with more, news commentary.
